Definition of Tissue

A tissue is a group of similar cells that work together to perform a specific function.

Types of Animal Tissues

• Epithelial Tissue: Covers body surfaces and lines cavities; e.g., skin, intestinal lining.
• Muscle Tissue: Responsible for movement; e.g., skeletal, cardiac, smooth muscles.
• Nervous Tissue: Transmits nerve impulses; e.g., brain, spinal cord.
• Connective Tissue: Supports and connects organs; e.g., bone, cartilage, blood.

Types of Plant Tissues

• Meristematic Tissue: Actively dividing cells; e.g., apical meristem.
• Permanent Tissue:
  • Simple: Parenchyma, Collenchyma, Sclerenchyma
  • Complex: Xylem, Phloem

Organs & Systems

Organs are made of tissues performing a specific function. Organ systems are groups of organs working together. Example: Digestive system consists of mouth, esophagus, stomach, intestines.
