Cameroon GCE Ordinary Level Standard
A machine is a device that makes work easier by either changing the direction of a force, multiplying the force, or increasing the distance over which the force is applied.
A lever is a rigid bar that rotates around a fixed point called the fulcrum. It is used to lift or move loads with less effort.
| Class | Position of Fulcrum | Examples | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| First Class | Fulcrum between effort and load | Seesaw, crowbar, scissors | Can multiply force or distance depending on fulcrum position |
| Second Class | Load between fulcrum and effort | Wheelbarrow, nutcracker | Always multiplies force (MA > 1) |
| Third Class | Effort between fulcrum and load | Tweezers, fishing rod | Increases speed or distance, but MA < 1 |
