Definition of a Machine

A machine is a device that makes work easier by either changing the direction of a force, multiplying the force, or increasing the distance over which the force is applied.

Related Terms

Levers

A lever is a rigid bar that rotates around a fixed point called the fulcrum. It is used to lift or move loads with less effort.

Types of Levers

Class Position of Fulcrum Examples Description
First Class Fulcrum between effort and load Seesaw, crowbar, scissors Can multiply force or distance depending on fulcrum position
Second Class Load between fulcrum and effort Wheelbarrow, nutcracker Always multiplies force (MA > 1)
Third Class Effort between fulcrum and load Tweezers, fishing rod Increases speed or distance, but MA < 1

Example of a Machine

Pulley System:
A pulley is used to lift heavy loads by changing the direction of the applied force. In a movable pulley, the mechanical advantage is 2, meaning the effort required is half the load.
