Definition of a Machine

A machine is a device that makes work easier by either changing the direction of a force, multiplying the force, or increasing the distance over which the force is applied.

Mechanical Advantage (MA): The ratio of the load to the effort.
MA = Load / Effort
Velocity Ratio (VR): The ratio of the distance moved by the effort to the distance moved by the load.
VR = Distance moved by effort / Distance moved by load
Efficiency (η): The ratio of the useful work output to the total work input, expressed as a percentage.
Efficiency = (MA / VR) × 100%

Levers

A lever is a rigid bar that rotates around a fixed point called the fulcrum. It is used to lift or move loads with less effort.

Types of Levers

Example of a Machine

Pulley System:
A pulley is used to lift heavy loads by changing the direction of the applied force. In a movable pulley, the mechanical advantage is 2, meaning the effort required is half the load.
